At a off-the-beaten path dealership... I guess? It was a building that sold cars really. It’s a ‘91 MR2, which the vin says has a 2.2L engine (the guy said 1.8, so I’m hoping it wasn’t a swap and that he was wrong) mated to a 5-speed manual.
He said the car has been sitting for 3 to 4 years, and that it was a ‘rare car’. He then looked at me and said “...but you probably knew that...” , I just shrugged and nodded. The guy said its probably all locked up, and as-is would sell for $2k; but if they took a month to fix it, it would be $4500.
The car probably has rust issues he said, but it’s what I would like in a car, rwd, manual, quirky looking. The only downside is that I couldn’t transport my wife and kid, so the wife will have to be left out, :p.
Oppo, we might need to start a “let’s get ztp a cool cheap car so he can learn how to wrench” fund. Think of his kids!

You noticed (what looks to be) the dealer tag on the right side of the spoiler there, right? :P
Clearly a good omen!

With all that rust? Not worth it at all. You can do way better.

I’d wait for another one to come along. That one’s a little...rough, to say the least.

I can’t find any online reference to a car tuner called opposite love...could it be a opponaut’s old car?

Fair enough, it just caught my interest because it's the first mr2 I've really seen. We don't get many up here.

My reaction when I saw the rust...
I’d offer them $-39.

So what, he gives me $39 to take the car? I could live with that.

This is only a good idea if you’re trying to give your wife and child both tetanus.

If you’re really serious about getting an MR2, search around. You may not find one locally. But if you’re just looking for a fun car, then pass on this one.

Naw, don't have the funds (or will ever, really), but this mr2 has definitely perked my interest in it.

If I was you, I’d try to find a CVPI/civilian CV to replace your Grand Prix. V8 torque, good fuel economy, easy to work on, RWD fun.

“The guy said its probably all locked up, and as-is would sell for $2k; but if they took a month to fix it, it would be $4500.”
This is almost always a bullshit tactic to get you pressure you to buy it as is. They’re not fixing shit.

Actually, I inquired about the price, it didn't seem like he was gonna even mention it.
“So what’s the price of it?”
“Of it all fixed up”
“Well fixed up and as-is, just so I can know”.

I’m still paying on the prix, so it’s with us for 4.5 more years. If I sold it now, I’d be losing money on a car that works as desired. I just like to play with my ‘fun’ car idea, lol.

There are just such better examples out there for not too much more (if we’re talking NA here, I suppose).

Well it’s the first MR2 I've seen in person, and its definitely perked my interest in the car. It looks like it would be a blast to drive (the mr2, but not this car specifically). I was really surprised that it was a manual though, I totally expected an auto.

That was the point of my AW11. Woooorth it.

Enlighten me, I’ve seen the phrase AW11 used with MR2 a lot on the interwebs, what is it?

MKI chassis code. MKI is AW11, MK2 is SW20, MK3 is SW30.

Being a 3S, is there anything that will ever need to be fixed? It’s basically a debored 90s Camry motor.

Oh, I thought it referred to the engine? That's what Wikipedia said.

The AW11 had either a 4AGE NA or later a supercharged 4AGZE as an option. Both are 1.6L DOHC engines. NA screams to 8000. SC’s got torque. There was also some other 1.5L thing available in Japan, but no one bought it because it was shit.

When I was shopping for a MR2 Turbo the crackpipe was hard as FUCK with these cars.
I tried to buy two for $7k and both deals fell through and i’m GLAD because both would require a lot of work or a THROUGH look through as they were projects. Everyone thinks they have GOLD just because it’s a turbo.
The whole experience trying to get a MR2 led me to never want to buy a Japanese car that is not from Japan ever again. I bought a Skyline and it was the best purchase i’ve made in recent years. Next car I buy will be a Celica GT-Four, R33 GTR, Silvia, or Pulsar GTIR or something like that. If I want a MR2 turbo I will get a Japanese one.

you would be surprised how cheap some of these cars are. Like my Skyline cost $4000 though it more than tripled in value within 3 or 4 months of my buying it most other cars are still cheap like that. Of course the import fees/shipping was around $2000 so you would need like $7k to be safe which probably is still too much.
The fact you can get a car like that for $7k makes me laugh when I see prices for these cars in the US now.
When I was buying this Skyline I saw Silvias for like $2000. They are a bit more now but not outrageous like US car prices.

You could try talking to pacific coast auto and tell them your budget and see if you have any options.
